How to Show File Extensions on a Mac

Every file on your computer's hard drive contains a short extension that identifies its file type. By default, the Mac OS X operating system automatically hides these extensions. However, you can enable the display of file extensions through the Finder preferences window.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Mac running OS X 10.4 or later
  1. Step 1

    Click anywhere on the Mac desktop to switch to the Finder.

  2. Step 2

    Go to the "Finder" menu at the top of the screen and choose "Preferences."

  3. Step 3

    Go to the "Advanced" tab at the top of the Finder preferences window.

  4. Step 4

    Check the box next to "Show all file extensions."

  5. Step 5

    Close the Finder preferences window to save the new settings. All file extensions will now be shown.
