To put in a ceiling, drywall should be hung to cover the wires, ducts and plumbing. It provides insulation and reduces noise, as well. It's moderately challenging to install a ceiling because drywall is cumbersome and heavy. It also requires precision to avoid obvious seams and gaps.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Furring strips
  • Hammer
  • Nails
  • Pencil
  • Drywall
  • T square
  • Utility knife
  • Chaulk line
  • Adhesive
  • Screws or nails
  • Hammer or screwdriver
  • Compound
  1. Step 1

Check for obstructions. Make sure there is nothing in the way of where the ceiling will go, including duct work.

  2. Step 2

Use hammer and nails to install furring strips, perpendicular to the beams. Nail the strips right into the beams.

  3. Step 3

Mark the walls with Xs where the studs are located, using a pencil.

  4. Step 4

Measure and mark a cut line on the first piece of drywall. Line the T square's straight edge on the edge of the drywall and cut along the line. Create a chalk line if you need to cut a longer length.

  5. Step 5

Move the drywall panel to the edge of the work surface. Snap it to break off the excess, along the cut line. Turn paper over and slice through the paper backing from the back of the drywall.

  6. Step 6

Squeeze adhesive onto the ceiling joists that will be covered with drywall. Raise the first drywall piece straight up to the ceiling and slide it into the corner.

  7. Step 7

Butt the tapered edges of the drywall together over each joist. Use the X marks on the wall to know where to place nails or screws. Drive them into the joists with a hammer or screwdriver, forming dimples in the surface of the drywall.

  8. Step 8

Drill fasteners in 7 inches apart on the edges of drywall and 12 inches apart in the middle of the boards. Make sure they all enter a stud.

  9. Step 9

Fill the dimples in with compound once all the drywall is attached to the joists. Go on to build the walls or tape and spackle the ceiling.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a drywall hanger to make the project go more smoothly. Recruit a friend to help because drywall is very heavy. Know that a few cuts may be needed to get through the drywall. Attach the drywall within 10 minutes of applying adhesive, or it will dry. Stagger the seams of drywall for better stability.
  • Wear eye protection Work as carefully as possible to prevent visible seams or mistakes
