How to Treat Thrush Mouth

Thrush mouth is a fungal (yeast) infection on the lining of your mouth. Symptoms are white lesions, resembling cottage cheese, on your tongue and cheeks that may be painful and bleed. It can be caused by steroids weakening your immune system, antibiotics or birth-control pills disrupting your body's natural balance, or other immune system-weakening diseases.

      Visit your doctor when you notice signs and symptoms of thrush mouth in yourself or in your child. Your doctor will diagnose the condition based on an examination of the white lesions. Blood tests may be required to determine if a different condition is causing the lesions.

      Treat oral thrush in infants by cleaning all pacifier and bottle nipples in a mix of equal parts white vinegar and water until the infection clears. Doctors may prescribe an anti-fungal medication for the baby. Nursing mothers may be given an anti-fungal cream to put on their breasts to prevent the transfer to their babies.

      Treat thrush mouth in toddlers by giving them unsweetened yogurt. If symptoms persist, the doctor may prescribe an anti-fungal medication.

      Treat oral thrush in healthy adults by eating yogurt and adding acidophilus supplements. If symptoms persist, the doctor may prescribe an anti-fungal medication.

      Treat thrush mouth in immune-compromised adults with a prescribed anti-fungal medication. If symptoms persist, the doctor may prescribe amphotericin B to clear up the infection.
