Things You'll Need:
- 3/8-inch MDF (medium-density fiberboard)
- Wood screws
- Silicone caulk
- Wood glue
- Speaker terminal cup
- 5 1/4-inch two-way car speakers (pair)
- Speaker wire
- Wire cutters/strippers
- Circular saw
- Jig saw
- Drill
-
Step 1
Cut two pieces of MDF with the dimensions of 8 by 12 inches, and two pieces with the dimensions 6 by 12 inches. The first two pieces will be the front and back of a single enclosure, and the second two pieces will be the sides of the enclosure. (As you do each step, repeat it so that you are making two enclosures at the same time.)
-
Step 2
Cut an opening for one speaker in the front side piece. Use your 6 1/2-inch speaker as a template for the opening. Cut an opening in the lower portion of the back panel for the terminal cup. Use the terminal cup as your template for the opening size.
-
Step 3
Attach the front and back panels to the side panels. The front and back panels should overlap the side panels, so that the joint is not visible from the front or back. Attach the pieces together with wood glue and wood screws. Caulk the seams of the inside of the enclosure with your silicone caulk.
-
Step 4
Cut two pieces of MDF with the dimensions of 8 by 7 1/2 inches. These will be the top and bottom of the enclosure.
-
Step 5
Attach the top and bottom panels to the enclosure with wood glue and wood screws. Caulk the inside seams where you've attached the new pieces. Allow the glue and caulk to dry.
-
Step 6
Attach an 8-inch piece of speaker wire to the back side tabs of the terminal cup. Feed the wire into the box through the terminal cup opening, put the terminal cup into the opening, and attach it in place with wood screws.
-
Step 7
Attach the other end of the speaker wire to the terminals of the speaker. Mount the speaker into the opening of the enclosure.
