A variety of different roofing steels are available. Copper is the most popular. Copper turns a beautiful patina color over time and lasts a century. Other roofing steel tends to corrode. No matter what type of steel you choose to roof your house with, cutting it is simple. Just be careful; steel edges are sharp.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tape measure
  • Chalk
  • Tin snips
  • Metal shears
  • Work-bench
  1. Step 1

Purchase steel roofing material from any roofing supply or home store. It either comes in a roll, sheets or small squares.

  2. Step 2

Measure the roofing steel to size. Mark it with chalk.

  3. Step 3

Hold the roofing steel firmly in the opposite hand---or lay it out on a work-bench if the sheet is large.

  4. Step 4

Use a pair of tin snips, or a pair of metal shears, and begin to cut your metal along the marked line.

  5. Step 5

Use your knee to hold the steel down, if it came in a roll. Or, if the steel is on the workbench, use the palm of your hand to hold it flat as it is unrolled.

Tips & Warnings
  • Lay the steel roofing material out on a large area of the garage or the patio, if you do not have a large work-bench.
  • Do not touch the edge of the cut steel unless you are wearing gloves. Metal edges can be extremely sharp.
