Avoid wearing shoes two days in a row, and allow shoes to air out for 24 hours.

If you walk to work, or walk a long distance from your car to work, wear athletic shoes and change into your work shoes when you reach the office. This will make your dressier shoes last longer.
Avoid dragging your feet or kicking rocks while wearing dress shoes.

I noticed that if I stored all my shoes in one basket, they would rub on each other and look worse and worse when I took them out to wear. For shoes that you want to last longer, keep them in separate shoe boxes or clearly separated on a shoe rack. -

Make sure you don't go walking through wet mud in your smart shoes. Also, if they're like Timberland shoes, try not to wear them when it's pouring rain. -
