How to Replace Aluminum Single Pane Windows With Replacement Windows

Older homes often have aluminum single-pane windows. These windows have only one pane of glass and as a result are not as energy efficient as newer replacement windows. A typical replacement window includes two panes separated by an insulating layer, which usually contains argon gas.   • Tape measure

      Measure the old aluminum window to get the dimensions for the replacement. Use a tape measure to determine the width and height of the current window.

      Go to a home improvement store and buy a replacement window. Replacement windows come in standard sizes, which means if the window measurement is non-standard, a custom size will need to be ordered.

      Remove the aluminum window from the wall. Find out how the window was originally installed to determine what tools will be needed take it out. Aluminum windows can be installed with screws or nails in the studs, which may need to be cut.

      Pull the aluminum window out of the wall and remove all debris, such as flakes of paint or nails, from around the bottom of the sill.

      Place the new replacement window into the opening in the wall and secure it to the studs or frame. A replacement window is going to need two to three screws secured on each side depending on its size.

      Place new insulation and drywall around the new window. Run a bead of caulk down each edge of the window on the interior and exterior to prevent leaks.
