How to Make a Beaded Tapestry

Beaded tapestry is an art form that involves weaving beads on a loom with warp and weft threads. The kind of loom necessary to bead tapestry is available in smaller sizes in craft stores and has pegs and stretcher bars on each side. The beads that are typically used are small seed beads that come in many different colors and hues.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin warping the loom at the top edge. Tie the Nymo D around the left top warp peg and pull it over the spacer and across the entire loom to the right top peg. Wrap the thread around the peg and bring it back to the left top peg.

    • 2

Continue wrapping the thread around the left pegs and bringing the thread across the loom to the opposite right pegs, wrapping the thread around this peg and bringing it back across the loom again to the left side. Keep the thread evenly spaced as you work to warp the loom.

    • 3

Tie off the thread when you have a warp thread for each row of the tapestry you will be weaving plus one extra. Check to be sure that the threads are evenly wrapped with even tension. Wrap the thread around the last peg four times and tie in a tight knot.

    • 4

Thread the needle with approximately 1.5 yards of weft thread.

    • 5

Tie your weft thread to the left top row of warp thread and consult your bead pattern to determine which beads should be woven for the first row. Add these beads to the needle.

    • 6

Thread the needle under all of the warp threads on the loom.

    • 7

Push the beads up with your finger from underneath the warp threads so that each bead appears above the warp threads and there is a thread surrounding each bead.

    • 8

Hold the beads in this position and pull the weft thread up, over, and around the warp thread on the end of the row. Thread the needle back through each bead.

    • 9

Consult your beading pattern and place the beads for the next row onto the needle. Repeat steps 6 through 8.

    • 10

Repeat steps 6 through 9 to finish weaving the pattern. Clip the weft thread and weave it back through several beads to secure the thread.

    • 11

Remove the tapestry from the loom by cutting the warp threads. They should be cut away from the tapestry as far as possible. Weave the warp threads into the beads.
