Sound: the depth of an otherwise empty space, an evoker of emotion, a harbinger of news, sometimes good, sometimes not. In all of its intricacies, there are times when the only way to control what you hear is through the use of earplugs. But how to choose what is right for you?

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

    The Right Stuff(ing)

  1. Step 1

Decide how much sound you want to block by use of an earplug. Do you want to reduce outside noise slightly, moderately, significantly or totally? Here's a list of some of the types of earplugs available:
    Foam plugs
    Silicone plugs
    Ear muffs
    Noise-cancellation headphones

  2. Step 2

Determine if there are any special requirements besides sound reduction. Do these need to also keep water out of your ear for swimming or bathing? Are there specific restrictions on where they can be used like on commercial airline flights or staying on your head while you sleep?

  3. Step 3

Consider your budget. Basic foam or silicone plugs are relatively inexpensive. Ear muffs tend to be more costly, and noise-cancellation can run into the hundreds of dollars.

  4. Step 4

Locate a store or online source to purchase your selection based on the above criteria. A quick Internet search revealed earplugstore.com. Others are also only a click away. For traditional shopping, most any home improvement or hardware store, as well as most pharmacies, will carry the basic foam and silicone earplugs and many will carry ear muffs, as well. For noise-cancellation headphones, your best bet will be a personal electronics store like Best Buy, or department stores like Target, Wal-Mart and others.
