Symantec is a company that produces anti-virus software to protect your computer from online threats, worms and spyware. The software runs scheduled scans and notifies you if it perceives a threat to your system. You can completely remove Symantec AntiVirus software from your computer through the uninstall option, or you can simply disable the program, so it does not scan for viruses and threats.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

    Remove Symantec AntiVirus

  1. Step 1

Click on the Start menu in your taskbar.

  2. Step 2

Click on "Settings" and then "Control Panel." The control panel box will open.

  3. Step 3

Select "Add or Remove Programs." A box opens that lists the programs installed on your computer. You can sort the list by name, size, frequency of use, or date last updated.

  4. Step 4

Click on Symantec AntiVirus from the list. Click "Remove."

  5. Step 5

Confirm the uninstall when the dialogue box appears. Click "Finish" to confirm that you want to remove the software. When completed, the uninstall box closes and Symantec AntiVirus is removed from your computer.

  6. Disable Semantec AntiVirus

  7. Step 1

Right click on the Symantec AntiVirus icon in your system tray (lower right side of the screen). The icon looks like a gold shield.

  8. Step 2

Select "Open Symantec AntiVirus..." to open the program.

  9. Step 3

Click on "Configure" on the left side of the box. Three choices appear: File System Auto-Protect, Internet E-mail Auto-Protect and Tamper Protection. Select the option you want. The right side of the box changes accordingly.

  10. Step 4

Uncheck (deselect) the "Enable Auto-Protect" box. This disables that particular security scan. Click OK to save your changes.

  11. Step 5

Repeat for the other options if you want to disable them all. When you are finished, click "Exit."
