Decorating your living room with pictures and other artwork is a way to showcase your family's interests, as well as set or coordinate the design scheme for the room. You can also show off your family with a portrait in a formal living room or a wall bank of old family photos in a more casual living room. Decorate your living room walls with pictures to fit your lifestyle and compliment your decor.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 8-by-10-inch photos with similar content 11-by-14-inch picture frames with mats 4-by-6-inch black-and-white family photos 8-by-10-inch frames with mats Laser level
  1. Step 1

Take pictures of local landscapes or enlarge photos from a favorite vacation to decorate your living room walls. Frame three to five 8-by-10-inch pictures in similar or matching frames, and line them vertically to cover a large wall. Botanicals are also perfect for this type of wall treatment. The mats can be the same or different colors, but should coordinate with the colors of the room and the image in the picture. If the mats are different, the frames should be the same to unify the images.

  2. Step 2

Make a wall bank of black-and-white family photos to decorate a large wall in your living room. Frame and mat all the pictures the same. For 4-by-6-inch pictures or smaller, use 8-by-10-inch frames with large mats. Shades of white, red, silver or black matting work well with black-and-white pictures. Hang at least three pictures across, and five or six down to create a large square of framed pictures evenly spaced at the top and the bottom. A laser level is helpful when you are hanging pictures in perfect alignment.

  3. Step 3

Hang an oversize family portrait over the fireplace or behind the sofa in your living room. Decorate the rest of the walls in the room with mirrors, sconces and any type of picture that is not your family. The large portrait will dominate the room, so let it stand alone on one wall with landscapes, botanicals or other artwork decorating the remaining walls.

Tips & Warnings
  • Have pictures custom framed at your local craft or frame store. You can also learn how to save money and custom frame pictures yourself with the help of online tutorials.
  • Decorate with pictures that match the scale of your room. One or two small framed pictures will be lost in a large living room; one large picture can overpower a small living room.
