      Download Messenger from MSN.com.

      Install the program and launch Messenger. A pop-up box will appear with a welcome and button to "Sign In."

      Wait for a new box to appear after clicking the "Sign In" button. It will ask for a sign-in name and password. If you have an MSN account, fill in this information. If you don't, click the link that states "Get One Here" and follow the instructions for a new email and password for your account. When done, Messenger will launch.

      Under the "Contacts" tab, select "Add a Contact." A wizard will pop up to walk you through the process of adding the email addresses and information for your friends and business pals.

      A list of your friends will appear, with those online with green MSN icons next to their name and red MSN icons next to those who are offline.
