How to Do a Wheelie on a Z400

A Suzuki Z400 is a four-wheel, off-road vehicle that can be used for recreation or for hauling outdoor equipment and supplies. Doing a wheelie on a Z400 can be a way to show that you've mastered the ATV. Keep in mind all safety precautions when practicing this trick.

Instructions

    • 1

Reduce the air in the Z400's wheels--not too much, but enough so that when you press your weight down on the ATV, the wheels compress a bit and form a flatter surface with the ground. This helps to create better balance for you, and gives a springing effect to the ATV when you attempt a wheelie.

    • 2

Adjust your clutch handle according to your preference. A clutch that can be compressed all the way to the handlebars will give you a better grip on the Z400 while you're pulling up on the front end. However, if you prefer the clutch to be wound tighter, adjust it to your fit. Make sure that however it's adjusted, it remains comfortable as you go into the trick.

    • 3

Practice with a "sit-down" wheelie. This is recommended as all necessary controls are easily accessible. Keep your feet on the pegs, hands on the bars, brakes and clutch, and maintain a speed of about 15 mph. Ensure that your helmet is strapped on and your pads are locked in place.

    • 4

Pull assertively up on the handlebars. When first practicing, don't jerk too hard--you want to get the motion and feeling of the front-end coming up first. Practice jerking up and letting the Z400 drop. With each pull, aim a little higher. Increase and decrease your speed to get the feel for the motion at different speeds.

    • 5

Reach the balance point. Keep jerking up, but try to keep the front-end in the air as long as possible. While it may feel awkward at first, do not let up on the throttle as this will change the balance point and will cause you to lose the wheelie. Maintain speed once you've reached the balance point, and you'll be able to ride the wheelie as long as you please.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure to practice under supervision of an experienced ATV rider.
