How to Ship a Laptop Computer
You might need to ship a laptop computer, and because it's an expensive item, you don't want it to get damaged in the mail. Knowing how to ship a laptop also saves you from negative feedback from buyers on any auction sites you use if you are selling it.

You'll need a proper box. When you buy your laptop, you can save the box that it came in as long as it's still in good condition. Most major mail carriers have a specific flat box just for shipping laptops. Postal workers will also be able to instruct you on the best way to package your computer.

Consider a laptop mailer. You can buy boxes that are made specifically for shipping laptops. They are a little more money than what you will pay at the post office. However, they come complete with special foam inserts. An added bonus is that laptop mailers also have a separate compartment for the AC adapter so it doesn't scratch or damage your laptop computer.

You may be tempted to place your AC adapter on the top of your computer. This may be how you store it inside your home. Instead, place it to the side so it doesn't damage the laptop during shipping.

Protect the computer. Make a sleeve out of bubble wrap. You can do this by taping bubble wrap around your computer. You can even leave an extra flap so the person receiving the laptop can easily slide it out. Once you place the laptop in the box, fill the remaining space with packing peanuts so the computer doesn't jostle during shipping.
-
5
Tape the box using packing tape. If you are using an old box, tape along every seam as an added security measure.
-
6
Print the shipping address on a self-adhesive label. This will ensure that the postal carrier can read the address correctly. Also include your return address so the postal office can get the package back to you if there are any problems with the shipment. Print clearly if you write out the address.

Use insurance and delivery confirmation. This will add to the cost of shipping, but it may be worth it in the end. At the post office, your insurance fee will depend on the cost of the computer. You can also purchase the ability to track your item online and have delivery confirmation. This is important if you are shipping your laptop to someone you don't know. This way, that person won't be able to say that she didn't receive the item.

Tips & Warnings
If you ship your laptop through Federal Express or UPS, you'll need to deliver the box to their nearest location. FedEx provides a service in which it will pick up the item at your house for a fee.
