How to Clean Your Teeth With Herbst Braces

Many children, young adults and older patients receive braces to improve tooth alignment, jaw structure and overall well being. There are different types of braces used for different reasons. Herbst braces are used to correct overbites. They can be worn alone or with regular braces. Proper tooth care while wearing braces is important to maintain general wellness and good hygiene.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Floss
  • Floss threader
  • Soft tooth brush
  • Tooth paste
  • Proxabrush
  • Mouthwash with fluoride
  1. Step 1

    Rinse the mouth with clean water to remove any large, loose food particles.

  2. Step 2

    Floss the teeth using a gentle sawing motion when you have braces. It may be easier to use a floss threader to get underneath the brackets.

  3. Step 3

    Brush the teeth as normal with the soft toothbrush, working around the brackets to continue to dislodge food particles.

  4. Step 4

    Insert the proxabrush between the first two braces. Using an up and down motion, brush between each bracket. These brushes are specially designed to work with braces. Brush between each bracket.

  5. Step 5

    Rinse using a fluoride mouth wash.

Tips & Warnings
  • Brushing the tongue while brushing the teeth may help eliminate bad breath odors.
  • Checking with the orthodontist is important prior to using a mouth rinse containing fluoride.
