How to Insert a Column in a Gantt Chart

A Gantt chart is a bar chart that displays a project schedule. It shows the start and end dates of various tasks that need to be completed for a project. The time frame appears horizontally across the top of the chart, and each task is listed vertically. Gantt charts can be created in various applications. You can insert a column in a Gantt chart using Microsoft Visio, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Project.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert a new column in a Gantt chart in Microsoft Visio. Click on the column heading to the right of where you would like a new column to appear. Go to the Gantt Chart menu and select "Insert Column." Choose the appropriate type of column in the "Column type" list, or choose "User-defined" column if none of the options fit the type of data you would like to include in your column. Click the "OK" button.

Insert a new column in a Gantt chart in Microsoft Excel by inserting a new column in the data table. Enter data in the new column. Click on any place in the chart so that the chart toolbar appears. In the drop-down menu, select "Chart Area." Drag the marker to include the new column. The Gantt chart will automatically be updated to reflect this new column.

Insert a new column in Microsoft Project. Go to "Sheet View" and select the column to the right of where you want the new column to appear. Go to the "Insert" menu and select "Column."

Enter the field name and title. Align the title and data. Adjust the column width either by specifying a value, or checking off the "Best Fit" box, so that the column adjusts to the longest item in the column. If you would like to wrap the column heading to the next line, check off the "Header Text Wrapping" box and click "OK."
