Post-nasal drip is excessive mucus produced by the sinuses that builds up in the back of a person's nose or throat. It can be caused by colds, sinus infections, allergies or even dental problems. There are prescription and over-the-counter treatments, including antihistamines, decongestants, antibiotics and nasal sprays. It can also be treated naturally, leaving your body free of the unnecessary chemicals and side effects of medication.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Blow your nose often, but don't overdo it. Blowing your nose regularly eliminates congestion from the front of the nose before it ends up draining.

  2. Step 2

Use saline spray as often as you want. Saline spray is a safe alternative to other over-the-counter sprays, as it does not dry out the mucous membranes.

  3. Step 3

Use a humidifier. They help keep nasal passages moist, especially during winter months.

  4. Step 4

Add ½ teaspoon of salt to eight ounces of lukewarm water. You can flush your nasal passages with it or even gargle it.

  5. Step 5

Drink plenty of fluids to help keep the mucous lining moist. Try drinking hot tea with lemon or honey to help the post-nasal drainage pass more smoothly.

  6. Step 6

Try some relaxation techniques to reduce your stress level. The parasympathetic nervous system controls the lining of the nose, which is heavily responsive to stress.

  7. Step 7

Eliminate or cut down on dairy products. Dairy products promote excess mucus production.
