How to Set DSL Modem Duplex Level?

Networking devices, such as the DSL modem that allows users high speed access to the Internet, can operate in 2 duplex modes. These modes are half duplex and full duplex. In half-duplex mode, only 1 system can transmit data at a time. In full-duplex mode, computers can send and receive simultaneously. A user can switch the duplex mode of his DSL modem easily enough.

  1. How to Set Duplex Level on a DSL Modem

    • 1

If you are using a router in addition to your modem, remove the networking cable from the router.

    • 2

Enter Firefox, Internet Explorer or your favorite web browser from your computer's desktop screen. Which web browser you use does not matter.

    • 3

Move the cursor to the address bar and type in the local IP address of your modem. This is usually 192.168.1.1 but check the modem manufacturer. The next steps will differ, depending on the make and model of your DSL modem, but the overall process is the same.

    • 4

You will now see the screen that allows you to change your DSL modem settings. Select the connection setting's screen or menu, depending on how your modem software is designed.

    • 5

There should be a duplex setting box on this screen. It is usually in the form of a pull-down menu. The options might be something like "full," "duplex" and "auto." Select the setting you want to use on your network.

    • 6

Plug the router back into the network if you are using a separate router to connect other computers to the Internet. If you do not share Internet access or you are not using a router, skip this step.

    • 7

Click on the networking box on the right side of the Windows task bar. This step may not always be necessary, but the compute will be assigned a new IP address on the network. The IP address used by the router to get on the Internet does not change.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check to make sure of the IP address for your make and model of modem. If the internal address is not 192.168.1.1, the browser address bar will not take you to the modem software set-up page.
