How to Live With HPV in Men

Human papillomavirus, also known as HPV, is a sexually transmitted virus that can cause infection in the genital area. According to the Centers for Disease Control, there are over 40 types of HPV and most sexually active people will contract one at some point in their lives. One of the common symptoms that come with HPV is warts on the penis and anal area. In the worst of cases, cancer can even develop. There is also a chance that no symptoms will show up at all. Either way, millions of men have to find a way to live with it.

Instructions

    • 1

Use condoms. HPV is very contagious and it is most often spread through anal and vaginal sex. Condoms can help keep HPV from spreading but don't protect other areas where contact might be made.

    • 2

Abstain from sex. Although it might be extreme, abstaining from sex prevents the transmission of HPV. In this situation, resorting to masturbation will be a safer road.

    • 3

Boost your immunity. HPV is a virus: drink a lot of water and eat fruits and vegetables that are high in antioxidants. This will keep your immunity high to fight the virus.

    • 4

Seek a counselor or therapist. When you contract HPV, you might have a lot of feelings of depression, anger, guilt and frustration. A sex therapist or counselor can help answer questions and give you support.

    • 5

Talk to your partner. It is important that your current partner or future partner knows that you have the HPV virus. Sit down with them and explain the details of your situation. Discuss contraception methods with them and allow them time to think about the situation.

Tips & Warnings

  • Group therapy can also work effectively as a way to converse with people who are in the same situation.
