Chronic periodontitis is a gum infection that causes an array of symptoms, such as swollen gums, painful gums and bad breath. This condition typically arises from poor oral hygiene. If left untreated, chronic periodontitis can result in tooth loss, and this condition increases a person's chances of developing heart problems and other related illnesses. Fortunately, there are ways to treat chronic periodontitis and improve the health of the gums.

Things You'll Need:

  • Antibiotics
  • Floss
  • Mouth rinse
  • Electric toothbrush
  1. Step 1

Talk to your doctor about scaling. This non-surgical procedure effectively treats chronic periodontitis. Using an ultrasonic device, a doctor removes tarter and bacteria from the teeth and gums. Removing bacteria treats the infection, and prevents future infections.

  2. Step 2

Take an antibiotic. To treat chronic periodontitis, doctors will likely prescribe an antibiotic. This can include an oral antibiotic or an antibiotic mouth rinse.

  3. Step 3

Floss on a regular basis. Flossing removes plague and food from between the teeth. This reduces bacteria that can infect the gums.

  4. Step 4

Use an electric toothbrush. An electronic toothbrush eliminates tarter and plague, which reduces bacteria in the mouth. Brush at least three times a day, or after every meal.

  5. Step 5

Carry a portable mouth rinse. If unable to brush your teeth multiple times a day, bring along a small bottle of mouth rinse. Rinse your mouth throughout the day to eliminate bacteria that causes chronic periodontitis.

Tips & Warnings
  • In severe cases of periodontitis, surgery may be necessary to repair damaged gum tissue.
