You're just a brief setup away from being connected to the world at broadband speeds. Cable Internet service gives your the ability to surf the Internet, download music, email pictures and much more at blazing fast speeds-surpassing the outdated dial-up service before it and it doesn't require the bulky filters of digital subscriber line (DSL) service. Everything you need will be provided by your Internet service provider (ISP), but a quick run to your local electronics store for a few extra cables and adapters can help you optimize your setup.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Coax cable (3 pieces)
    • Coax splitter
    • Ethernet or USB 2.0 A to B Cable
      • 1

Connect the first piece of coax cable to the splitter. Connect one end of the coax cable to the side of the splitter that has only one port, and connect the other end to a coax wall outlet.

      • 2

Attach a second piece of coax cable to a port on the other side of the splitter-the side of the splitter that has multiple ports. Connect the other end of the second piece of coax cable to the coax port on the back of your cable modem.

      • 3

Connect the last piece of coax cable to the splitter. Connect one end to the side of the splitter with multiple ports-the same side you connected the cable modem to-and connect the other end to the coax port on the back of your cable box.

      • 4

Connect either an Ethernet or USB cable to the modem and your computer. Connect one end of your chosen cable to the yellow Ethernet or blue USB port on the back of the modem and connect the other end to its matching port on the back of your computer.

      • 5

Plug the power adapter into the modem, and then power the modem on. Open the Internet browser on your computer-your Internet service provider's (ISP) setup page should appear. Or, install the software provided by your ISP.

    Tips & Warnings

    • You can install an Ethernet card into your computer if your computer doesn't already have one-the speed and reliability of Ethernet is worth it. If you're using a wireless router in your setup, run the Ethernet cable to the router instead of the computer. Use an addition piece of Ethernet cable to run from one of the multiple Ethernet ports on the back of the modem to your computer..
