Instructions

    • 1

Have a mechanic check the engine for anything that seems out of the ordinary. Tell the mechanic what you are looking for and to inform you of any items or pieces that are not normally part of the vehicle's engine mechanics.

    • 2

To inspect the underside of the vehicle, use a jack or lift to raise the vehicle to visibly inspect all surface areas. Run your fingers along any crevices and into any shadowed areas or areas with little to no visibility. Check the wheel wells, door hinges, bumpers and all joining seams of the vehicle.

    • 3

Within the interior of the vehicle, thoroughly inspect the dashboard area, under the steering wheel, seats, cushions and along the floor and pedals of the vehicle. Reach into small areas with your fingers to feel for any devices that may have been placed into a crevice or seams of the vehicle.

    • 4

Turn on the RF signal detector. RF detectors monitor the immediate area surrounding the device for any radio signals that are transmitted, including those put out by GPS and tracking devices. Because many GPS and tracking devices send out signals up to 20 minutes apart, it may be necessary to continuously monitor for signal for up to 40 minutes to detect any tracking devices that are present on the vehicle.

Tips & Warnings

  • There is no guaranteed technique to finding tracking devices, nor are there methods to prevent tracking devices from being placed on vehicles.

  • Some vehicles have on-board or built-in tracking devices that can be removed only by a professional.
