How to Add a Hit Counter

Although there are different ways to add a hit counter to a Web page, one of the most common approaches is done by using Microsoft FrontPage software. Microsoft FrontPage allows users to do almost anything for a Web page, including creating and adding a hit counter.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Microsoft FrontPage by clicking on the FrontPage icon on your desktop or in your applications folder. Once the program opens, click on the "Design" button that is at the bottom of the window.

    • 2

Click on the area of the Web page where you want for the Web counter to be placed. Most Web sites with counters place the counters on the bottom of the page to keep them from detracting from the page's design.

    • 3

Navigate the mouse to the top of the page and click on the "Insert" menu. After clicking, a menu will open up. Click on "Web Component" in this menu.

    • 4

Choose the button that says "Component Type," then click on "Hit Counter." Choose a style for the counter by clicking on the "Choose a counter style," menu and clicking on one of the styles for the counter.

    • 5

Choose how many digits you want included on the counter by selecting the "Fixed number of digits" box and inputting the number of digits to display. If only three digits are selected, the counter will stop at 999. Most small Web sites are best served by including six or seven digits.

Save the document and upload it to the server you are using. The way this is uploaded depends completely on the specifications your Web host has set.

Tips & Warnings

  • A Web developer can choose to upload his or her own style of Web counter if he or she has designed one instead of using one of the templates.

  • This process will not work if the Web server does not run FrontPage Server Extensions.
