Get the Most Money from Your Financial Aid Package

Applying for financial aid is a lengthy process, but it is well worth it in order to maximize the government's contributions to your college education. A carefully filled out application can help you get money for books, class fees, housing and food. Financial aid applications can be stressful, but there are several ways to boost the amount of money you will receive from your college of choice. Maximize your financial aid package by taking the time to carefully fill out the application and follow through with schools as necessary.

Instructions

    • 1

Submit the FAFSA as early as possible (see Resources). Submissions are accepted as early as January 1, and much of the money is given on a first-come, first-serve basis.

    • 2

Apply for private scholarships to supplement the school's financial aid offer.

    • 3

Attend a public school to receive more aid money. Private schools give less aid in general, as they consider contributions from divorced parents who don't have sole custody, homes and other assets, which most public schools don't consider when calculating financial need.

    • 4

Contact the financial aid office at your school of choice to negotiate a higher financial aid package. When you meet with the financial aid advisor, explain your personal circumstances that call for a higher financial aid package (including distance you'll need to relocate, personal hardships, recent unemployment in the family or illness) and explain if you have higher offers from other colleges, particularly rival colleges. Be sure to explain why you would be a valuable addition to his school and why the school's investment in you would be worthwhile.
