How to Spend Memorial Day With Kids

Before you head to a barbecue or go camping, take a moment during the day to explain the meaning of Memorial Day to your kids. Attend a parade or a ceremony at a military cemetery. Allow your kids to help you hang an American flag in front of your house.

Send an online card to a soldier overseas. Encourage them to express their gratitude and give encouragement.

Print the lyrics to patriotic songs, such as "Star Spangled Banner" and "Proud to be an American," and sing these with your kids.

Visit a family member who is a veteran or locate a local retirement or nursing home that may be home to a veteran. Bring a letter or picture to give to the veteran, and encourage your kids to thank him for his duties to our country. If your kids like to perform, ask them to sing one of the songs you practiced.
