Kill Flies in Your Home
Kill Flies in Your Home

Flies can be a major problem during the summer months, and can be difficult to get rid of altogether. Fortunately there are many ways of killing flies and stopping them from entering your home.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Flies
  • Bug Spray
  • Sticky Fly Traps
  • Venus Fly Traps
  • Jam Jar
  • Water
  • Screwdriver
  1. Step 1

The first step if you have a lot of flies in your house is to stop them getting in by shutting all of the windows and open doors. If this isn't possible because the weather is too hot, then investing in some screen doors and window guards is a good idea. These stop anything from coming inside

  2. Step 2

Cleaning up everything the flies might be attracted to is the next thing to do. Flies are generally attracted to any kind of food that you might have on display, and are particularly fond of canned pet food, excrement from pets and sugary substances. Making sure that these are kept to a minimum within the home is a good way of making sure flies aren't tempted to come inside.

  3. Step 3

Next is to kill all those already in the house. The easiest way to do this is simply to use bug spray or to hit them with a rolled up newspaper so long as there isn't too many. Bug sprays are effective, although they are often harmful to both pets and people if breathed in. So make sure pets and children aren't around when you spray it around.

  4. Step 4

Preventative measures are next, as well as killing flies outside the home that might try to get in. First of all you should hang some sticky fly strips in any places you have covered area, for example porches or sheds. Also if you have places where flies tend to land a lot, then you should consider getting some Venus fly traps. They are usually fine sitting in their pots and don't need to be planted until they grow a lot bigger. if flies land near them enough times during the day, they are sure to catch some of them.

  5. Step 5

Problem areas are the lest place to kill flies, which are places that they always tend to congregate in large numbers. Often compost heaps, garbage cans and litter boxed tend to fall into this category. First of all take a jar of jam or jelly when nearly empty, and add in a little water. Mix the solution together and then tightly screw on the lid. The level of the liquid should be about 1/4 of the jars height. Next stab some holes in the lid of the jar with a sharp screwdriver, making sure they are about large enough for a fly to squeeze through. Lastly set up the trap in a place with a lot of flies and leave it there during the day. The flies fly inside the jar trying to get to the jam, and when they are inside they cannot land on the liquid surface or find their way out and so get stuck. This trap will also kill wasps, hornets and the occasional bee as well.
