Format a Hard drive in Windows Vista

This article will show you how to format your hard drive in Microsoft Windows Vista. All of the tools we will be using are built into Windows Vista.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Microsoft Window Vista
  1. Step 1

    Go ahead and click the "Start Menu" in the bottom left hand corner. Then open up the "Control Panel".

  2. Step 2

    Now we need to click on the icon that's labeled "Administrative Tools". Then you click on "Computer Management".

  3. Step 3

    On the left hand side of the "Computer Management" tool, you need to click the "Storage" tree, then "Disk Management"

  4. Step 4

    Now that you see a list of drives starting with your "C:\", which you cannot format while you are in the operating system. But you can format any other drives. Go ahead and right-click on any drive you would like to format and select "Format".

  5. Step 5

    Now you have the options to give the drive a label, which is what the name of the drive will be. Give it any name you want, keep the settings on FAT32, Allocation Unit size to "default", and check the box to "Perform a quick format", then click "OK"

  6. Step 6

    You may see a few pop-ups after you click the "OK" button, just click "YES"

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure before you format any storage device, make sure you have everything off of it that you do not want to lose! Formatting completely erases the drive.
