Create a menu that your guests will remember on the Fourth of July.

Independence Day is a traditional time of celebration. Gathering together family and friends is a classic part of the day, but the menu doesn't have to be the same every year. If you're looking for new traditions, or just a break from the standard hamburgers and hotdogs, search out some other menu options to make the day even more special. With some careful research and prudent shopping, Fourth of July can offer your guests a day memorable for more than just the fireworks.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide a theme. The Fourth of July traditionally celebrates red, white and blue. Theme your menu along these lines, with red for the appetizer, white for the entree and blue for dessert, for example. Or choose a theme that celebrates food from a specific region, such as Texas barbecue or a New England clambake.

Decide how you anticipate people will eat. If a large crowd is invited, and you have limited table space, plan easy finger foods, such as sliders and fried chicken. Keep the side dishes easy to eat while holding a plate or using a cocktail table, such as rolls, French fries and lettuce wraps. If the seating is more formal, select dishes that can be served on a platter, such as steaks, fillets of fish and kebobs. Select side sides that are easy to pass among the guests.

Plan dessert timing. Many Fourth of July parties start the dessert just before the fireworks, to help people gather and collect on blankets to view the show. If you plan to have people stay for fireworks, offer coffee after the show to help people drive home safely.

Choose your recipes. Use either traditional recipes from within your family or select expert recipes if you're branching out. If you're working with a caterer, specify the theme and ingredients with which you want the caterer to work.
