Determine the size and type of mattress you need before comparison-shopping.

Buying a new bed can be a big expense, but well worth it. When your back and body aches, you toss and turn at night and you never wake up rested, the culprit might be your worn-out mattress. New beds are expensive, and going to the store to pick one out can be a hassle. But you can do some homework ahead of time that will save you money. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Determine what size mattress you want, whether it's a twin, full, queen or king size. Examine what size is practical for your bedroom. Full and double mattresses are actually the same size, and a queen-sized bed is only about 4 to 6 inches wider.

    • 2

Do not be swayed by the person selling the bed. He might take you to a high-priced mattress. Walk around the store until you find what fits you. Tell the sales representative your price range.

    • 3

Lay down on the bed. It might feel embarrassing or uncomfortable, but laying down on the bed in the position that you go to sleep in is the best way to find out if it's going to be comfortable. Lay on your stomach, side and back. Toss and turn. Most people who buy new beds go in the store and sit down on it. While sitting on the mattress might give you an idea of whether the bed is hard or not, this is not a good enough test of comfort.

    • 4

Test out the three basic technologies: spring/coils, latex and memory foam. Some customers find one type preferable to others. Spring and coils are more traditional, while latex resists bed bugs and memory foam is more expensive but long-lasting. Look at the thickness of the mattress too; determine if you will be comfortable climbing onto a high mattress every night.

    • 5

Ask the sales representative if there are any discounts available. Sometimes there are returns or other in-store promotions that can get you a deal. Depending on the store, the salesperson has some leeway to barter with you on the price.

    • 6

Ask about warranties and the ability to return your bed if you get it home and are not satisfied. Make sure that there is a comfort exchange for your bed, so you can return it if it's great in the store but uncomfortable once you get it home and set up. Of course, these are void if you damage the mattress or stain it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Shop around until you find the bed that's right for you, but don't be too frugal. This is, after all, a long-term investment.
