Step 1
The first step in holding your baby in a football hold or any hold for that matter is not to be nervous. You love and made this baby and being confident will help you can gain more and more courage when holding your newborn baby especially men.
-
Step 2
Here are instruction to put your baby in a football hold for those who are right handed.
The steps are the same whether or not you are standing by or sitting next to the baby. The baby should be on your right side though.
Simply take your right hand and slowly slide it under the baby's neck and head with your palm facing upward toward the ceiling. Now your thumb should be on the side of the neck behind the baby's ear toward the skull and your other fingers should be on the back of the baby's skull bracing the baby's neck toward the other side of the head. -
Step 3
Then take your left hand and lift the baby's bottom toward your body while lifting the baby with your right hand supporting the head and neck and your left hand supporting the baby's bottom.
-
Step 4
Now your baby will be well supported and what you can do now is lift the baby up toward your armpit and body and tuck the baby into your body with your forearm and elbow tucking the baby well into your body. Do not let the baby go with your left hand if you feel like the hold is insecure and you are not comfortable. When you feel like the hold is secure you can move your left hand.
-
Step 5
With your baby now secure in the football hold you will be able to breastfeed. The football hold is also used for premature and fussy babies. I also use the football hold to bathe my newborn baby's as well.
