Step 1
Know how your Dad likes to be loved. Does he like gifts, time, or hugs best? The book The Five Love Languages can be a big help in determining the best way to love your Dad. It doesn’t help to buy your Dad an expensive tool or car, see him for 5 minutes and then leave if his love language is quality time. Some Dads would rather have the gift of your time or affection much more than anything you could buy them in the store.

Step 2
Pay attention to clues. Listen to what your Dad is saying. Is he telling you about a problem? Is there a gift that you can buy him that will solve the problem he is mentioning to you?
-
Step 3
Don’t get nothing. Even if your Dad says not to get him anything at least get him a card and visit him at some point during the Father‘s Day weekend. Even the person who has everything enjoys getting a card and spending time with their child.

Step 4
Food and hobbies can fuel some great gifts. Buy your Dad something he doesn’t buy himself. It doesn’t have to be expensive. Maybe he loves strawberry pie, but just doesn’t buy or make it himself. It will mean a lot to him that you remembered something that he enjoys even if he didn’t mention it. Watch his diet though. If he is a diabetic and loves gummy worms, it might be better to think of a more healthy alternative in the long run.
Magazine subscriptions in the hobby of his choice are sometimes fun to get your Dad. That way he can think of you every time he receives a new issue. If he’s not a reader, then a DVD about his hobby might be more accepted.
