How to Breathe While Practicing Tai Chi

The principles of yin-yang are practiced throughout the art of Tai Chi. Breathing, by its nature, is yin-yang; we breathe in (yin) and exhale out (yang). Just as there should be yin and yang properties to each tai chi movement, there should be a matching yin-yang breathing.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Stand with your feet slightly apart, toes pointing forward. Shift your weight to your left foot. Palms are pressing downward at approximately your hip in height. Begin breathing in very slowly; the intent is to breathe in deeply to the bottom of your lungs.

  2. Step 2

Continue the yin, breathing in, process. To make the top of the tai chi ball, reach slightly toward the right with the right hand while adjusting the right toe to point out at forty-five degrees. Immediately transfer the weight to the right foot. Leave the right hand out to the side.

  3. Step 3

Finish the yin by finishing the ball. Bring the left foot alongside the right, the left toe only touching the floor. At the same time, scoop the left hand underneath the right. It should appear as if you are holding an invisible beach ball on your right side. There is no weight transference to the left foot.

  4. Step 4

Begin the yang (or exhale) portion now that the ball is complete. Position your left foot one step forward, the toes pointing straight ahead.

  5. Step 5

Transfer your weight onto the left foot. Roll left hand out from under the ball while the right hand rolls back. Imagine you are rotating that invisible beach ball, and the left hand is moving toward the front while the right retreats to the back.

  6. Step 6

Continue breathing out while the right foot steps up alongside the left. Scoop the right hand underneath so that it supports the bottom of the ball. The ball is now held on the left side with the left hand on top. You have successfully rotated the tai chi ball.

Tips & Warnings
  • Throughout your tai chi form, breathe in slowly during the yin portions and exhale in the yang. Typically, the yin portions are those that set up a move, whether it is a transition between moves or the actual beginning of a move. The yang is generally the finishing, or application portion, of the movement.
