How to Determine a NAICS Code
Federal statistical agencies created the NAICS Code, which stands for the North American Industry Classification System, to place businesses in 6-digit code classifications related to economic trends and data collection. It can be overwhelming to look at these classification codes and choose which one best represents your company. However, that should not deter your ability to update your codes with the Census Bureau.

How to Determine a NAICS Code

1
List your business' primary activities. Don't try to limit this list because you may be able to combine things when cross-referencing the list. Business activities may be book publishing, farm construction or anything that describes what you do.
-
2
Review the list, and place your key words in order of the most dominant business practice.
-
-
3
Log onto census.gov/naics (see References below).
-
4
Locate the "NAICS Search" box on the left, and type in the top key words of your primary business activity. Press "Search."
-
5
Review the list that comes up to see which of them best describe your business.
-
6
Go to census.gov/epcd/naics02/naicod02.htm (see References below) to see all the listings if nothing on the list provided describes your company.
-

Choose a broad category that is listed, and more elaborate sub-categories will appear.
