Things You'll Need:
- Ruger P85 semiautomatic pistol
- Gun cleaning kit for 9mm handgun
- Ruger P85 instruction manual, or internet connection
- Old toothbrush
- Several cloth rags

Step 1
Before cleaning, inspect the P85's chamber to ensure it is not loaded. Make absolutely sure there is no round chambered before attempting to clean the gun.

Locate your P85's instruction manual and look up the fieldstripping procedure. If you cannot locate the instruction manual, it can be found online along with various unofficial fieldstripping procedures.

Disassemble your P85 as detailed in the fieldstripping procedure. This allows access to the firearm's internal working parts which, as a rule, should be cleaned every time the barrel is.

Dip a patch in cleaning solvent and run it through the barrel several times with the rod from your cleaning kit. Repeat with a second solvent-dipped patch, and then remove the solvent by running a clean, dry patch down the bore. Run new patches down the bore until they come out clean.

Once the patches are coming out completely clean, dip a new cleaning patch in oil and run it through the bore once. This lubricates the barrel and prevents rusting.

Take a toothbrush and dip it in cleaning solvent. Scrub the internal parts of the P85 with solvent and wipe clean with a rag. Continue this process until the rag remains clean after wiping the internal parts.

Apply a small amount of oil on all the internal moving parts to lubricate them and prevent rust accumulation. Reassemble your P85 and store it in a dry place.
