Instructions

    • 1

Buy a disposer with a one-half horsepower motor rating, a self-reversing motor to prevent jamming and a manufacturer's warranty of at least five years. The best garbage disposers also feature insulation to cut down on sound, overload protection to reset the motor if the system overheats, and a grinding ring made of cast iron. You don't need to spend a great deal of money to purchase a quality garbage disposer, but it is always a good idea to invest in the best one your budget allows.

    • 2

Locate the plate on the bottom of the disposer and remove it. Using the combination tool, strip 1/2 inch of insulation from each of the wires in the appliance cord and connect the white wires with a wire nut. Do the same with the black wires; then connect the green wire to its corresponding green ground screw. Put all the wires back into the opening and reattach the disposer's bottom plate.

    • 3

Put a large bead of plumber's compound under the flange of the disposer's sink sleeve, then slip the sleeve into the drain opening. Put the fiber gasket and the backup ring onto the sleeve. Next on the sleeve, put the upper mounting ring and slide the snap ring into the groove.

    • 4

Locate the three mounting screws and tighten them. Lift the entire disposer so that the mounting lugs are just under the mounting screws. Turning the lower mounting ring clockwise, attach the disposer to the mounted part of the assembly.

    • 5

Use the provided rubber washer and the metal flange to tach the discharge tube to the side of the disposer where the discharge opening is located. If you are planning on attaching a dishwasher to the garbage disposal, use a screwdriver to take out the plug in the dishwasher nipple and attach the dishwasher drain hose using a hose clamp.

    • 6

Attach the discharge tube to the continuous waste pipe, using the provided slip washer and nut. Use a hacksaw to trim the discharge tube if it is too long.

    • 7

Complete your installation by inserting a screwdriver into a mounting lug on the lower mounting ring and tighten by turning clockwise. Use a pair of channel-type pliers to tighten all of the drain slip nuts.

Tips & Warnings

  • Many areas have plumbing codes that require garbage disposal systems to be attached only to a grounded outlet controlled by an above-the-sink switch. Be sure to check your local plumbing codes with the areas building inspectors before installation.
