Change Titles in Windows Movie Maker

Windows Movie Maker is a useful tool for making home videos, presentations and slide shows that bring photos to life. You can learn to change titles in the program to make them fit the slides you show. You can also transition slides into and out of your show so its viewers will pay rapt attention and eagerly await the next title.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • PC with Windows XP or Vista
  1. Step 1

Add a title by clicking "Titles and Credits" in the "Tools" menu. From there, choose the location of your title on the "Where do you want to add a title?" page. You can add a title that appears at the beginning of your clip, is overlaid on top of your clip or appears at the end of your project. (Note that overlay titles can only be added in timeline view. All other types of titles can be added in timeline or storyboard view.) When finished adding text and animation to each title, click "Done, add title to movie."

  2. Step 2

Adjust the title display timing by clicking and dragging the bar that shows your text on the timeline view accessible through the "View" toolbar. Extend the duration of your title by clicking and dragging the end-trim handle toward the end of your project timeline. Shorten the duration of your title by clicking and dragging the start-trim handle toward the beginning of your project timeline.

  3. Step 3

Enter title text by going to the "Adding Titles or Credits" page accessible through the "Tools" menu bar. You may then enter title text, change the animation, or change the text font and color. You may want to make your presentation more interesting by changing the font and/or text color; however, it's recommended that you shouldn't have more than one uniform font per presentation, and two font colors.

  4. Step 4

Choose the type of title animation and display on the "Choosing Title Animation" page. From there, you can choose whether you'd like one or two lines of text. If you choose one line of text, the text will be displayed all in one box that appears at once, rather than one line at a time. If you choose two lines of text, you will have the option to enter text in two boxes, rather than just one. You can then have one of the boxes appear first and the second one appear last. You may have more than two lines; just hit "Enter" as you type, and each time you do, you'll get a new line of text that will appear after the preceding line.

  5. Step 5

Enter text for credits in the small grid that appears on the "Credits" page under "Choosing Title Animation." Arrange the text so that the top row contains the movie title and the following rows have information in two columns containing credits. For example, you may choose to have the first row in the first column contain the word "Director" and the second column in the same row contain the director's name.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remove titles by viewing them in storyline or timeline view, selecting and then deleting. This step is much easier than adding, so make sure you really want to do it before you commit to it.
