How to Make Window Frames
Making a window frame in a wall involves more than just cutting out the old drywall and studs to create an opening. The area around the window must also be reinforced to support the remainder of the wall. The initial framing of the windows is done as the wall itself is being built, but it can also be done later if you decide to remodel. Follow this guide to make a window frame that will safely support the weight of the house.

1
Measure the window you will be installing. The window frame you will be making should be 2 inches larger than the window's dimensions on each side.
-
2
Cut away the drywall if you are making a window frame in an existing wall. Cut any wall studs that are in the area where you wish to make the window opening.
-
-
3
Measure the length of the existing wall studs. Cut two pieces of 2 by 4 lumber to match this length. These will be the king studs that run along the vertical edges of the window opening. Install the king studs between the floor and ceiling plates.
-
4
Cut 3 pieces of 2 by 6 lumber to match the width of the window opening. Two of these pieces will be the headers at the top edge of the window frame. Use a long level to draw a straight line where the top edge of the window will be. Set one of the headers on top of this line and nail it to the king studs on the sides of the window. Place the other piece of 2 by 6 on top and nail it to the studs and header.

5
Use the third cut piece of 2 by 6 to create a sill plate along the bottom edge of the window opening. Use the level to make sure it is straight, then nail it to the king studs on either side.
-
6
Measure the distance between the sill plate and the floor. Cut 3 pieces of 2 by 4 to match this length. Nail one vertical support under each edge of the sill plate so that it rests alongside the king stud. Install the third vertical support in the middle of these two.
