Start a Career in Diesel Mechanics

Diesel mechanics are specially trained auto mechanics who service diesel engines. Qualified diesel mechanics can obtain work for government jobs, wholesalers and trucking companies. As the population of diesel mechanics is nearing the age for retirement, there is a new demand for young workers in the field.

Instructions

    • 1

Take advantage of free education by enrolling in auto mechanic vocational technical courses while in high school. These courses will provide the basis for a career in diesel mechanics.

    • 2

Enroll in diesel engine repair courses. These are offered through community colleges and typically result in a certificate in diesel repair or an associate's degree.

    • 3

Obtain a commercial trucking license. Visit your state's DMV website for requirements to obtain this license.

    • 4

Apply for diesel mechanic jobs. Some colleges may help with job searches, or you can use a website such as Diesel Mechanic Jobs (see Resources).

    • 5

Obtain a job. Freight-trucking companies are most likely to hire inexperienced, recent graduates. At first, job duties may be small, such as working on brakes, electrical systems or other parts of the truck. Gradually, duties will increase to supervised engine repairs and finally to unsupervised work.

Pursue other certifications to continue to advance and increase potential earnings. Certifications are offered through the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence.
