Clean a Lens Filter
Clean a Lens Filter

A lens filter can be used to protect a lens, filter out certain types of lighting and to create special effects. Avoid overcleaning a filter as it can cause more damage than the benefits of cleaning.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bulb blower
  • Lens-friendly cloth
  • Lens cleaner
  • Lens cleaning pen
  1. Step 1

Read the care instructions of the filter carefully. Some filters have coatings, some are made from glass and some are made from other materials. Cleaning instructions for one type of filter might damage another.

  2. Step 2

Blow the hard particles from the surface of the filter using a mechanism such as a bulb blower. Do not use your breath as a blower as the mist can encourage scratches.

  3. Step 3

Clean the surface with a cloth specifically designed for filters. Using the wrong type of cloth can leave scratches.

  4. Step 4

Moisten the cloth with a drop of water if necessary or use a cleaner designed specifically for the type of filter you are cleaning.

  5. Step 5

Apply cleaner to the lens if it is especially dirty and allow it to dissolve the dirt before removing with a cloth.

  6. Step 6

Cleaning pens are available to clean filters and lenses. On one end of the pen is a soft brush for removing dust and on the other end is a microfiber type pad to remove grease.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't use microfiber cloths with liquid cleaner.
