Alcazar Castle is a magical castle and its architecture inspires imagination and fun. According to Castles.org, Alcazar castle was the real-life inspiration for Cinderella's castle at Disney World. A wonderful project for you to do with your kids is to recreate this famous and beautiful Spanish castle out of ordinary cardboard boxes. This will allow you and your children to learn about castle architecture and have a large castle to play around and inspire their budding imaginations.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 4-foot by 4-inch cardboard mailing tubes
  • Box cutter
  • 3 2-by-2-foot cardboard boxes
  • 18-inch-by-6-inch box
  • 2 3-by-2-foot cardboard boxes
  • Duct tape
  • 6 toilet paper tubes
  • PVA (Elmer's) glue
  • 3 sheets red construction paper
  • Scissors
  1. Step 1

Cut a 2-by-2 foot cardboard box into 6 2-foot long by 1-foot tall sections to create the walls. Save the leftover scrap in a separate pile. Cut 2 4-foot-long by 4-inch cardboard tubes in half, horizontally. Cut 2 1-inch wide by 1-foot long vertical grooves in the bottom of each tube. These grooves should be perpendicular to each other. This will allow you to slip the walls into the slots in the tubes. The tubes will act as your towers.

  2. Step 2

Cut the flaps off a 18-inch-by-6-inch box. Turn this over and cut a 1-inch wide and 1-foot long groove in the left and right sides for walls to slip inside. This box will act as your gate for the castle. Place a 1-inch wide by 1-foot long groove in the bottom left and right sides of a 2-by-2 box. This will act as the back of the castle.

  3. Step 3

Arrange the pieces of the castle. Place the gate down on the floor and slip a wall into the slots on each side. Secure this with a piece of duct tape. Connect a tower to each end of the walls and secure with duct tape. Slide in another section of wall to the left and right back side of the towers.

  4. Step 4

Place a 2-by-2 foot box on each side and cut a 1-inch wide by 1-foot long grove into the front and back of the box. Slip the wall section into the groove and secure with duct tape. Slip another wall section into the back of the box and attach a tower to the end of the wall. Secure these in place with duct tape. Place the back of the castle into between the two back towers. Place walls in between the towers and castle walls and use a strip of duct tape at each connection point to ensure the stick together.

  5. Step 5

Place a 3-by-2-foot box in the center of the castle for the main structure. Cut 6 toilet paper tubes in half, vertically. These will be the small towers on the main part of the castle.

  6. Step 6

Fold up the long side flaps on each of the boxes and tape it across the top with a long piece of duct tape it so that it is making a triangular roof. Do this for each box except the main section of the castle. Cut out a triangle from the scrap material and place this on the left and right sides of the roof to fill the roof in. Tape this on the box with three pieces of duct tape one on each side of the triangle.

  7. Step 7

Glue the toilet paper tubes vertically with PVA glue along the top of the main castle section. Cut an upside down "U" shape in the front of the gate to create the doorway of the gate. Cut out a 8-inch wide and 4-inch wide triangle out of red construction paper for the roof of each tower. Roll this into a cone and clue the ends together. Let the glue dry for 30 minutes and then add a ring of PVA glue to the bottom inside section of each tower roof cone and place this on top of each tower.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can paint the castle as well with light gray nontoxic acrylic craft paint to add some extra realism to the castle.
  • Be careful to watch your hands while doing any cutting of the cardboard.
