Snorkeling is a great activity to do with kids, especially if you are headed for a vacation at a fish-filled beach. You may think that buying snorkeling equipment for kids is as easy as choosing a matching set of snorkel, mask and fins. In truth, there's a lot more to making sure that you and your kids have a safe and fun experience snorkeling.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Snorkeling mask
  • Snorkel
  • Fins
  • Snorkel vest or life jacket
  • Sunscreen
  • Wetsuit (optional)
  1. Step 1

Make sure that your child's mask fits properly and comfortably over his mouth and nose. Have him hold the mask to his face without securing it with the strap. Then tell him to inhale. If the mask fits correctly, it will seal to his face. Otherwise, consider getting a special "youth" mask or a mask for smaller faces.

  2. Step 2

Choose a lightweight snorkel for your child so that it will not weigh her down. You may wish to choose a snorkel with a purge valve as well so that your child will be able to blow out any unwanted water from the snorkel.

  3. Step 3

Make sure that your child's fins are very flexible, not too stiff. Rigid fins are difficult to swim with, especially for beginners.

  4. Step 4

Invest in neoprene booties if you will be swimming near coral reefs. This will protect your child's feet.

  5. Step 5

Buy a life jacket or a snorkel vest for your child. This will make the more timid child feel secure, and it will help keep the more confident child safe as well.

  6. Step 6

Apply water-resistant sunscreen to all parts of your child's body that will be exposed to the sun. You may wish to encourage your child to wear a T-shirt as well, if you will be snorkeling for an extended amount of time.

  7. Step 7

Consider investing in a wetsuit for your child. Children get cold more quickly than adults.

Tips & Warnings
  • Allow children to get used to the equipment by using it in a swimming pool or near the shore before taking them out into the deep water.
  • Make sure that your children are supervised at all times while snorkeling.
