Things You'll Need:
- Roofing paper
- Staple-hammer
- Asphalt roofing shingles
- Galvanized roofing nails
- Hammer or electronic air pressure nailing gun
- Small piece of scrap wood
-
Step 1
Place roofing paper on roof deck. Use a staple-hammer and insert a staple about every six inches in all directions. Follow manufacturer's instructions.
-
Step 2
Begin laying asphalt shingles at the bottom edge of the roof. The first layer of shingles is installed backwards. Place a shingle so the straight, unclipped edge is flush with the edge of the roof.
-
Step 3
Drive three nails into the top edge of the shingle. Place one on either side an inch from the top edge and one inch in from the edges. Place the third nail halfway between the other two.
-
Step 4
Line up the bottom of the next shingle with the edge of the roof, as with the first shingle. Butt the sides up next to each other. Nail as before.
-
Step 5
Install second course. Stagger the shingles so their centers fall directly over the edges of the shingles in the previous row. Lay the shingle so that the clipped edge bisects the previous row in the horizontal center of the shingles and exposes half of the shingle while covering up the half where the nails are driven (this is called the "reveal"). Insert three nails, as before. Place one on either side an inch from the top edge and one inch in from the edges. Place the third nail halfway between the other two.
-
Step 6
Trim the last shingle in the row if it hangs over the edge of the roof when correctly placed ¼ inch from the previous one.
-
Step 7
To cover the ridge, cut the asphalt shingles in thirds vertically, using the preformed cut-outs as guides. Lay each 1/3 of shingle over the ridge of the roof with the cut edges hanging over the ridge. Insert a nail at the top of the shingle on either side of the ridge. Lay the next 1/3 shingle so it overlaps the previous one by about half. Continue to the other end of the ridge. Cut the final shingle to size if it hangs over the other end.
