How to Become a K-9 Officer

K-9 officers are some of the most feared and respected police officers. The position can allow you to gain more experience to advance your career. Becoming a K-9 officer takes time, effort and ultimately, a passion for justice.

      Enroll yourself in a community college (or university) and take Criminal Justice courses. Obtain at least an Associate's degree.

      Attend a police academy. Pass all of the tests and the physical exam.

      Create a resume highlighting all of your Criminal Justice education and your certifications that you earned in the police academy.

      Apply for jobs at your local law enforcement agencies. Submit your resume. Upon being hired, work as a regular police officer for some time in order to get adequate experience.

      Sign up for a K-9 unit at your local police department after serving the time required as a uniformed officer.

      Become a K-9 officer.

Tips & Warnings

  • In order to be a K-9 officer, you cannot have any felonies on your record. You must also pass a polygraph test.

  • Be sure that you are ready to be a K-9 Officer. Your dog must be well-taken care of and in good health at all times.
