How to Pass a Welding Certification Test

Though the industry itself is growing at only a moderate rate, the first two decades of the 21st century will provide a great opportunity for welders as employers struggle to find certified workers for their projects, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Top-paying welding jobs require certification, which is available through the American Welding Society. Each welding certification has a unique test, but there are some best practices and things to keep in mind to have success in any area.

1. Obtain practice welding time. This can be done at a local welding college or vocational technology education center.

2. Visit an AWS Accredited Test Facility. An appointment is usually required to take the certification test.

3. Before beginning the test, ask the evaluator about specific limits that can result in an automatic failure. Different examinations may have limits for time or other factors.

4. Read the Welding Procedure Specification for the test carefully. Stay calm, and read the text closely. Success on the examination depends upon following the specification carefully for a quality weld.

5. Carefully fit up the joints before beginning. Fit-up is scored on a welding certification exam.

6. Follow the correct welding assembly procedure for the specified task.

7. Pay close attention to positioning while performing the weld; it is the third and final factor in passing the welding certification.

• Don't despair if you do not pass on the first try. There is no limit on the amount of times you can take the test, nor is there a waiting period to retest. Learn from your mistakes, practice more if necessary and try again.
