1. Tie a large double knot when wearing neckties made of light fabrics such as silk or satin. Use a traditional single knot for conventional, heavier fabrics. Regardless of the size of the knot, the tie should hang in a way that it hides the buttons of your shirt.

2. Pair a tie and shirt--both in solid colors--for an understated, polished look. For a louder look with more pizazz, wear a patterned tie that creates a contrast against the color(s) of your shirt.

3. Make your daytime office ensemble work for after-hours fun by loosening the knot on your tie so that it does not hang quite as straight as it did during the day. Roll up your shirtsleeves to your elbows.

4. Choose a black skinny tie for trendy events and outings. Wear it with a collared shirt under a vest or a suit jacket. To inject some edge into your look, wear a leather jacket over a short sleeved T-shirt with your skinny tie.
