Before adding transmission fluid to a diesel, use the dipstick to check the level. If you see a puddle of red fluid underneath your car, your transmission is most likely leaking transmission fluid. Your diesel could also be burning transmission fluid. Both scenarios would cause your transmission fluid level to be lower than recommended.

Things You'll Need:

  • Small funnel
  • Transmission fluid
  1. Step 1

Open the hood and remove the transmission fluid dipstick located toward the rear of the engine. Put the dipstick in a clean location. You do not want to transfer any dirt to the transmission fluid.

  2. Step 2
    Pour fluid into the funnel
    Pour fluid into the funnel

Put a small funnel in the dipstick tube and begin pouring transmission fluid. Do not overfill the transmission fluid reservoir. Check your owner's manual for the correct type of transmission fluid for your diesel. Use a clean funnel that has not been used with other types of fluids.

  3. Step 3

Let the fluid settle for 5 minutes, then use the dipstick to check the fluid level. The fluid should reach the top hash mark on the end of the dipstick.
