How to Build a Mantel Shelf

While a fireplace can look pretty enough on its own, a mantel shelf above it can add an extra accent and make a statement in the room. A large mantel is particularly attractive because it can anchor the fireplace and draw attention to the wall. A mantel that is wide as well will allow plenty of room for family photos, trinkets, souvenirs, and other decorations that allow your home to reflect your personality. With little cost or effort, you can build a mantel shelf in an afternoon and have it mounted on the wall by the evening. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Set an 8 inch by 4 foot board down on the ground. On each of the lengthwise sides, hold a 4 inch by 4 foot board upright against the base board. This will create a beginning of a box shape. The 4 inch boards should be resting on the ground, not on the board. Nail through the 4 inch boards into the side of the base board, spacing the nails every six inches.

    • 2

Place the 2 by 8 inch boards on each end to close the box in. Nail through the side boards to secure the end pieces.

    • 3

Set the other large 8 inch by 4 foot board down over top of the box. It should fit between the side pieces but overlap the 2 inch end pieces. Nail through the top every six inches to attach.

    • 4

Sand the box until it is smooth and won't cause splinters. Apply a solid paint color or use a wood stain. Let dry for two hours, longer if suggested by the manufacturer, and add a second coat to the box.

    • 5

Hold the mantle shelf up over the fireplace and determine a centered placement. Lightly mark a few lines on the wall to note the satisfactory placement.

    • 6

Mount your brackets on the wall just under your placement for the shelf. Set the brackets to be eight inches in from the sides. Screw the brackets to the walls. Have someone hold the mantel to the wall while you screw the brackets into the mantel.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take your time finding a decorative bracket that suites your décor. The brackets will be seen when seated facing the fireplace so you will want something that matches and amplifies your style. Different fireplaces are different sizes. For a particularly large fireplace and hearth, some mantels are as long as six feet. If necessary, change the measurements of your mantel to lengthen the shelf.
