Create an Accounting Resume

Whether you're fresh out of school and preparing to start your accounting career, or you're just looking for a career change, your accounting resume has to stand out. Employers don't have a lot of time to pore over every resume they receive, so yours must grab their attention within a few seconds. These steps will help your accounting resume capture employers' interests and make them want to call you.

Instructions

    • 1

Put your contact information at the top of the resume. Include your full name, address, email and phone number.

    • 2

Describe your career objective in the first section. Make sure your objective focuses on your special skills, talents and interests, as well as the position you're looking for. Make the objective specific to the company the resume is going to.

    • 3

Summarize your qualifications in the second section. Include a general description of your education, work experience, any computer or software experience you have and any other skills that make you an attractive candidate for the position.

    • 4

Describe your education. Start with the most recent degree first, and list each school, the dates you attended, your major(s) and the degree awarded. Also list all relevant licenses and certifications and the dates you received them. If you have not yet graduated, write your expected graduation date.

    • 5

List your accounting professional experience, starting with your current or most recent job first. Include the name of the company and the city. Give a brief, preferably bullet-pointed explanation of your duties, responsibilities and special focuses.

    • 6

Mention your other skills. These can include any special areas of focus, foreign languages, computer skills or other abilities that can make you a more attractive candidate.

    • 7

Describe your various other activities in the last section. These can include your hobbies, extracurricular activities, clubs and organizations you're active in as well as any various professional affiliations.

Tips & Warnings

  • Leave lots of "white space" on your resume by allowing ample spaces between sections. Use a font at least as large as 12-point Times New Roman. Avoid the temptation to "pad" your resume by filling it with every extracurricular activity you've ever done. A padded resume actually shows the applicant's lack of experience, and makes her look like she lacks confidence in her abilities.
