Locate the particular relay switch that you are going to check. If you are checking a relay switch in your car, for example, it is likely to be located beneath the dashboard. In this case you have to remove the dashboard to gain access. Refer to your particular car's instruction manual for the appropriate way to remove your specific dashboard with a screwdriver.

Turn on the actual switch you are going to be testing. If this is your home, simply flip the switch. If you are checking a relay switch in your car, turn on the ignition to supply power to the switch.

Attach an end of your alligator clips to a grounded area. Using your multimeter, probe the wire that is exposed on the relay switch. Read the voltage measured on the meter. If the correct amount of voltage is registered, then your relay switch is working correctly.

Put the relay switch in the off position. If you are in your home, simply turn off the switch. If you are in your car, turn the ignition off.

Check for continuity between the relay switch and the electrical component that it is connected to. Use your multimeter to determine continuity. If there is no continuity, then your relay switch is working fine. If there is continuity, then your relay switch is going to either need to be fixed or replaced.
