How to Re-Title a Vehicle to Another State
Titling a vehicle in a new state is essentially the same process as transferring a title or filing for a title for the first time in a state. Different agencies handle car titles in different states--usually the Department of Motor Vehicles or Department of Transportation. In most states, there is a time limit; upon establishing residency in a new state, you must generally re-title your vehicle within 30 days to avoid fees.

1
Apply for registration in person. The individual listed on the out-of-state title must be present with identification.
-
2
Fill out the title-registration form. Provide information like a description of your vehicle and an odometer reading. You may have to get your car weighed and inspected; fees may apply.
-
-
3
Surrender your old title, registration and license plate. If your car is subject to a lien (if you are still making payments), submit your payment coupon book and lender contact information. If it is a leased vehicle, provide proof of ownership from the lessor.
-
4
Prove your residency. Residency requirements vary, but proof of domicile (a utility bill or copy of your lease) is usually sufficient.
